Green Weddings, a new trend?

I was reading today that more and more people are going green with their weddings. I love this idea and I had planned on doing the same if I ever get married. As I was reading I thought I wonder how you could go green at a wedding. I thought of a few things that I wanted to share with you. If you have any other tips feel free to share them also.

One that is almost a given is to get a horse and carriage for your ride away from the church. Plan the reception at a close location and it should be an easy trip. You can also encourage people to car pool to the wedding.

Use recycled paper for everything, invitations, menus, programs and anything else you use.

Throw bird seed instead of rice.

Have the wedding outside so you can reduce your energy use.

Buy locally grown flowers or pick your own and have a crafty person put them together for you.

buy all organic, the dress, the food and more, but don’t worry about organic if it’s all locally grown and produced. If you can get both go for it.

Have the reception outside and light it with LED lights.

Give out LED or Florescent lights as wedding favors along with a list of things people can do to help save the environment.

Thats my list what can you think of?

  1. Reese Said,

Wow! You know going green must be pretty popular if people are coming up with creative ways to include it in their weddings. I would have NEVER thought to do that. This is like the best thing I’ve heard about as far as going green besides eco-fashion. I would love to know how the wedding turned out. And organic foods are already expensive, but what better time to spend bundles of money than on a wedding right?

My fiancé and I just went green, so this is definitely something that we plan on taking into consideration. Bioheat is about the most drastic change we’ve made so far, but we both have no regrets. And when winter comes around it’s like our best friend. It’s cool too because it’s non-toxic and made of biodegradable every-day products like soybean oil. Cool right? Yea, people give us the most hilarious reactions when we explain to them what we heat our homes with. I always tell t hem not to knock it until they try it.

I work for NORA and got some really great ideas through my job, but most of the tips that I’ve used so far are from:

Check it out and see what other ideas are available that you may be interested in. You might be surprised on what kinds of little things can be done to make a big difference.
