The Sky Is Dark
- by Holly
Every summer I love to go outside and look at the night sky. I am very lucky as I live in the middle of nowhere and can actually see the stars when they are out. It’s fun to sit and make shapes out of stars and of course share the experience with my friends and family. If you don’t live in an area where you can see stars don’t worry you could always check out the Dark Sky Festival in Harmony Florida. It is on April 25th from 6 to 11pm and it a great way to help fight light pollution and show our children exactly what they are missing when they look up.
The dangers of light is becoming clearer to more and more people. Research as shown that people who live in more populated and well lit areas tend to be more likely to have breast cancer. More research involving the effect of light on our health is ongoing.
Of course being that this is close to Walt Disney world you can make this a great family event. I wanted to attend last year, but could not and it’s the same this year. School kind of gets in the way of traveling, but if you think you can get there you should check it out take a trip to Disney for me and show your children a great time in an area that is becoming more environmentally friendly and watching how much light they put out into the sky at night.
