Being Poor Cost More Then Being Rich
I was reading an article from the Wall Street Journal today on how being poor is actually more expensive then having money. I thought about my own experiences as an in poverty child, teen and young adult and I have to say this article hit it right on.
When your poor you can not shop around for deals, you have to go where you can get to, sometimes that means the corner store, other times you may get lucky and get a ride to the local market, but their prices are still high. You also have to pay more in fees and interest because your considered a high risk even if you make payments on time.
The article touches an many things that people never hear about the poor, most people believe that poor people get handouts and are on welfare, yes many are, but most are not because these poor, like my parents make too much to qualify for assistance, but not enough to really live on.
One thing they did not touch on much was the people who rose out of poverty and were able to get a few things, then with the recession it all has been taken away or may be taken away. That is where my family is now. They worked hard but still can not get help because they managed to buy a home and get a decent car. Now they are told by the state that they have too much in assets to get help, but you can’t sell the house or the SUV for what is owed on it. Meaning your stuck with no options.
The sad truth about times right now; Unless your rich, you can kiss having half-way decent life goodbye, at least for now. The good news is, if you can make it though another year or two you may be okay.

The options for people in poverty are often not available as easily to those who are in the middle cloass and definitely in the upper class. Mentors, especially those who have come out of poverty are one of the answers to this problem. Programs that offer assistance and rewards for those that are making the attempt to get out of poverty will be helpful too.

I agree, I think the system works against the people trying to get off of it. They either don’t help you or they get mad because you find a better job. My mother was refused help because she found a teaching job so she quit her job at a party store.
You must remember, the goal of the system is not really for everyone to become self sufficient. The goal of the system is to keep itself going. If everyone reached the goal of self sufficiency, many government systems would collapse. For instance, Department of Children and Families, Housing, Urban Development, the headstart program and so on. There are people who make millions in profits off the backs of the poor. If there were no poor, whatever would they do?
Don’t kid yourself. Those on top don’t want equality. They want things to continue as they are. You find that the system usually refuses to help those who are ambitious and determined, because they are not the ones who keep the system going. They help those with no goals, and ambition, because they keep the system going.
You make a great point. I have always believed that the government only helps those who will go nowhere and do nothing. Thats all there is to it.
